In feudal Japan, there were female samurai known as Onna-Bugeisha. They were trained in the ancient Samurai way. Often, those who were Onna-Bugeisha and married, were the women who protected the homes and villages while the men were at war. Those who were not married fought alongside the men on the battlefield. They were most often from high society and some of them are the most celebrated historical figures in Japanese history.
